Large Number of Vehicles Fined in Delhi for Violation of New Regulations

NEW DELHI: In a bid to control the air pollution levels in the National Capital Region of the country, the local government has issued strict restrictions regarding vehicles in the region.

A report mentioned that more than 5800 vehicles have been issued challans over violations in the past week. The new regulations were imposed by the competent authorities on November 4 in an effort to control the severely deteriorated air quality over the Delhi NCR region of the country.

As per the data issued by the Traffic Police of Delhi, a total number of 5882 vehicles were issued challans. This number was between November 4 and the morning of November 11. These were BS III petrol and BS IV diesel vehicles that were found plying on the road.

The transport department of the state also gave challan to 204 medium and heavy goods carriers registered in the region for not following the traffic regulations. A report said that the region has more than 16000 similar vehicles registered.

The new regulation has restricted the plying of all vehicles with BS III petrol as well as BS IV diesel engines to reduce the amount of emissions in the metro city. Emergency vehicles and other essential services were exempted from these restrictions.

Data from the enforcement department reflects that the enforcers had stopped 911 trucks at the entry point while allowing 691 trucks to enter till November 6.

Starting at the beginning of November, the Delhi Government has decided to extend these restrictions till the end of the month. These may be extended even further or revoked depending on the level of improvement or deterioration of the air quality in the coming days in the region.

Delhi suffered the worst air conditions of the year just after Diwali when the Air Quality Index remained Severe for quite a few days. This led to respiratory problems in a large number of citizens and the closure of schools in the National Capital and its nearby regions.
